Paychex - IHS Markit Small Business Employment Watch: Small Business Job Growth Rebounds as the Year Begins; Wage Growth Also on the Rise

The Paychex | IHS Markit Small Business Employment Watch started the year with an increase in small business job growth and wages in January. The Small Business Jobs Index stands at 99.88, a 0.18 percent increase over December. The job growth rate remains below last January’s level by 0.74 percent. Hourly earnings have grown $0.72 in the past year to $26.38. January’s 12-month wages growth rate of 2.81 percent marks an improvement from 2.78 percent in December. Read the full news release.
Paychex Says Report About Potential Merger with M&T Bank Is False

A blogger has reported that Paychex founder and chairman B. Thomas Golisano is “open” to a merger with the Buffalo, N.Y.-based M&T Bank. There is no foundation in fact in this blogger’s article. Golisano has never talked directly or indirectly with anyone, offered his opinion, or considered this merger. Anything of this nature would go through official Paychex channels as part of a comprehensive process that includes thorough review and consideration by the Paychex Board of Directors. This report is false.
Study: 48 Percent of Small Business Owners Would Support Mandatory Paid Family Leave

On January 1, 2018, New York became the latest state to implement mandatory paid family leave legislation. And, according to a recent Paychex Small Business Survey, nearly half (48%) of small business owners say they would, on some level, support legislation requiring paid family leave. The study, conducted in late November 2017 by Paychex, Inc., a leading provider of integrated human capital management solutions for payroll, HR, retirement, and insurance services, also found that 35% of American small business owners lack strong feelings either way on the topic of mandatory paid family leave, while 18% oppose the idea.
